People with chromosome defect and Children born with defects in chromosomes
Every human being has 46 chromosomes and they will be in 23 pairs. Along with it, there are two sex chromosomes in women, XX; two sex chromosomes in men, XY. Every chromosome has some genes on it. If there is some problem in the chromosome, there will be some defect in the genes, hormones or chemicals formed from it. This condition may lead to some kinds of disorders. There are structural defects and differences in the number of chromosomes some times. Contradictory to the common number of 46, there may be 45 or some times there may be 47 or 48 chromosomes. Cancer patients may have even more number than this.
Some women may have only one sex chromosome. This condition is identified as 46 XO. It is also called Turner’s syndrome. Sex chromosome is an important one and deficiency of one of it will lead to some diseases.
Some kinds of genes are essential for the proper functioning of the body. Lack of these chromosomes will make the functioning of the body abnormal. In these women, ovulation and uterus formation will not take place properly. Hence they face more menstrual related problems. They have very less chances of conceiving pregnancy. Children with this defect will have low IQ. They will get behind in studies. There will be some problems rising in men due to defects in Y chromosome. These men will have more problems in sperm count and related aspects. When the sperms of these persons are tested, problems in chromosomes can be detected. If that problem of chromosome is treated, then the difficulties in producing offspring will be solved.
Some children will be with 47 chromosomes. That means 21st chromosome is additional. Those who have this extra chromosome will mostly be mentally handicapped. Some of them may develop Down’s syndrome. Though we can’t do any thing for treating that child, some measures can be taken for the second child of that couple. Condition can be known before hand by scanning. When the chromosomes test are done and if the necessary treatments are taken, most of these related problems can be avoided.
