Is Cholesterol necessary?

There are some crores of cells in the human body. For the proper functioning of the wall of each cell, cholesterol is necessary. Also there will be some substances related to cholesterol in the bile coming from liver and in some kinds of hormones. In the absence of them, body will not function properly. So, cholesterol is necessary for every person.

Where from cholesterol comes and how much?

In general, 35 grams of cholesterol will be present in a person weighing 70 kgs. Every day one gram of cholesterol will be formed. Some part of it will be sent out through feces. Every day 100 to 300 milligrams of cholesterol will be reached to the body through food intake. Milk, eggs, meat, cheese and other food materials contain cholesterol in high amounts. It is not present in vegetarian foods. If there is no cholesterol in the food we take, our body produces it on its own. If there are cholesterol deposits, it will lower the production of the same.

How much should be present?

It is better for every person to have cholesterol less than 200 mg/dL. It is dangerous if present above 240 mg/dL. It is still some what dangerous if present in between 200 and 240 mg/dL.

Is Cholesterol the only cause?

Saturated fats along with cholesterol will block the flow of blood in blood vessel by accumulating in vessels. As a result, the concerned organ where the blood is blocked, will develop some or the other disease. So, the food we take should not contain more calories. If all types of fatty acids are present in a food material, it should be taken in less quantity. Cholesterols are necessary for human body since vitamins A, D, E and K will reach the cells through cholesterols.

  1. Stephen Guy-Clarke says:

Certain drugs can elevate cholesterol levels. These include steroids, oral contraceptives, furosemide (Lasix) and other diuretics, and levodopa (L-dopa, sold under the brand names Dopar, Larodopar, and Sinemet), which is used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Beta-blockers, often prescribed to control high blood pressure, can cause unfavourable changes in the ratio of LDL to HDL in the blood. Cigarette smoke contains large quantities of free radicals, many known to oxidise LDL cholesterol, making them more likely to be deposited on the walls of the blood vessels. The effect of cigarette smoke may be due to the direct oxidation of lipids and proteins, and it may also have indirect effects, such as the depletion of various antioxidant defences, which then allow other cellular processes (inflammation, for example) to modify LDL. In addition, smoking increases levels of LDL, lowers levels of HDL and increases the blood’s tendency to form clots. Underactive Thyroid and stress also result in an overproduction of natural cholesterol, and obesity causes unfavourable changes in serum lipoprotein levels.
