Be careful with Brain Tuberculosis

Many people think that continuous cough is the only symptom of tuberculosis and many people are of opinion that tuberculosis attacks only lungs and respiratory track. Only few are aware of the fact that tuberculosis may also affect brain which is still more dangerous. Actually, there are many differences between the symptoms of these two types of tuberculosis. Let us more about these types, symptoms and treatment methods of tuberculosis.

We think that tuberculosis only affects lungs and respiratory track. But it can affect any part of the body. Brain tuberculosis is one among them. 10% of patients of tuberculosis are suffering from brain TB. It is more dangerous than others. This disease spreads rapidly through mycobacterium tuberculosis. This microorganism enters respiratory track and from there reaches the brain through blood circulatory system. In most of the cases, it directly reaches brain from lungs without getting stuck in between. So, 90% of the affected people don’t show symptoms of lung tuberculosis. Rarely this microorganism is seen in lungs and spine even after reaching the brain.

After entering the brain, this microorganism settles in the meninges of that cover the brain. The process of spreading of this microorganism on the meninges is called as meningitis. In some people, it directly enters the brain. A gland will be formed in the brain because of this reason. Formation of single or many glands in this manner is called as tuberculoma.

Brain has cerebro spinal fluid, abbreviated as CSF. This fluid will be produced uninterruptedly and mixes up with the blood. When the glands that arises because of this disease, stops the fluid to move, fluid becomes stagnant in that region. It results in the prevention of communication of signals between brain and other organs. Hence, the patient gets to the stage of disability. Most of the time he or she will be drowsy and some times they can even lose consciousness and can get into coma stage. 80% of the sufferers of brain TB are affected by meningitis.
